250 City Road is a landmark development in Islington designed by world renowned architects Foster + Partners. It will eventually comprise 930 apartments and penthouses spread across eight buildings, including two landmark towers, and the aim is to create a ‘waterside neighbourhood’ with shops, restaurants, a luxury hotel and office space. This is a highly prestigious development and the penthouses are retailing at more than £2 million each. 250 City Road is on a triangular site between Angel and Old Street Stations and involves the transformation of a 1980’s business park into a residential community.

The Challenge
The scheme includes two residential towers of 42 and 36 storeys respectively. The tallest building is Carrara Tower - a 42-storey skyscraper that forms the first phase of the project and will comprise luxurious one, two and three bedroom apartments and penthouses, with apartments offering 360° views from the 10th floor upwards. In terms of construction, this poses the most significant challenges and various hoisting solutions were needed in order to transport heavy materials and workers.
The Solution
Berkeley Homes is the developer for 250 City Road and the company has a long-standing relationship with Sunbelt Rentals, with confidence in the company’s capability to deliver on large scale projects such as this. The primary hoist selected was the II Cage 21/39 Passenger and Goods Hoist for the vertical transportation of goods and construction workers working on the Carrara Tower part of the scheme. This hoist was selected as it was capable of meeting the hoisting requirements of reaching a top landing height 145m and serving 40 floors.
Various other Sunbelt Rentals hoists are also being used on this project. For instance, there are 3 x Combi Goods Only Hoists of various sizes on the site, ranging from a top landing height of 30m and serving 10 floors, and up to 40m and 12 floors. Two 20/39 Passenger and Goods Hoists are also being used, combined with Combi 20/37 Goods Only Hoists, to reach 30m and 10 floors.
The Results
Sunbelt Rentals has provided Berkeley Homes with a range of hoisting solutions for this prestigious project and they are being heavily relied upon during the construction phase of 250 City Road.
