British Steel
British Steel is one of the leading steel manufacturers in Europe, producing around three million tonnes of quality steel products annually. Steel products manufactured range from structural sections used on buildings and bridges, to steel rail products, special profiles and wire rods used for market sectors such as automotive and engineering.
The company has a huge requirement for the use of plant equipment on the firm’s sites and projects. Equipment is used for shutdowns, general repair and maintenance, structural inspections and repairs, and many other tasks. Most recently British Steel were seeking a reliable supplier for powered access equipment which is needed to allow maintenance and inspection of assets to be carried out at height.

The Challenge
With such a wide spectrum of equipment required for British Steel, it’s important that suppliers have the fleet size, scale, experience and resources available to fulfil the requirement, as well as a first class safety record. It’s also crucial that the supplier is based within the locality to ensure rapid delivery of high quality equipment as required.
The Solution
Sunbelt Rentals is British Steel’s trusted supplier of a vast range of plant hire equipment. We have a Sunbelt Rentals Industrial location based on-site at British Steel’s Scunthorpe mill and depots close by to the company’s Scunthorpe site and North East mills. We have built up an excellent partnership with British Steel and are familiar with the company’s site, processes and demands.
We supply British Steel with everything from lighting and generators, to radios and communication equipment, as well as accommodation products such as welfare units and portable toilets. During the COVID-19 pandemic we supplied a number of cabins to ensure that social distancing guidelines could be adhered to.
Most recently we have secured the contract to supply British Steel with a range of powered access equipment following a successful tender process. Powered access equipment allows British Steel teams to access height and carry out various tasks.
The Results
Sunbelt Rentals and British Steel have developed a strong working relationship whereby Sunbelt Rentals not only supplies a wide range of plant and powered access equipment, but also adds value in terms of innovation, continual improvements and ensuring the most stringent safety practices are enforced.
We have been able to add value by supplying powered access equipment pre-fitted with Access Control to ensure that only trained and competent individuals are using the equipment which is also pre-authorised to work in the specific area.
By controlling access in this way ensures users are familiar with the equipment before use. Access Control linked with telemetry provides the ability to monitor machines remotely, giving British Steel a better understanding of how the equipment is being used. And offering a more transparent overview for site demands, enabling them to use live information and reporting to adjust their powered access use on site.
