Innovation for Preston
Costain, on behalf of Lancashire County Council is building a major new road in Preston. The project is called the Preston Western Distributor, which will link Preston and southern Fylde to the M55 motorway.
Scheduled to open early in 2023, this £200m road scheme is the biggest new road programme in the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal. It will help to promote new housing and business development in the area, whilst increasing capacity on the existing local road network.

The Challenge
The project involves multiple stakeholders to deliver the large-scale construction of the flyover, which will include the creation of:
- A new motorway junction
- Four new bridges
- Two viaducts
The scheme also includes two new roads connecting to new and existing housing areas of North West Preston and Cottam. The new East-West Link Road and Cottam Link Road will provide convenient access to the Preston Western Distributor, avoiding already congested local routes.
Costain required a highly experienced plant and equipment hire company to support the delivery of such a complex, large-scale project.
The Solution
We are Costain’s strategic supplier of non-operated plant and powered access. Following a long-term successful partnership, working on projects such as the award winning A14 improvements together, our team is in place to deliver for Costain on the Preston Western Distributor works.
The Results
We will play an integral role in the delivery of this project. Our team will actively partner crucial stakeholders to bring innovative practices and environmentally sound products to the construction where possible.
Our team has already attended a Site Stand-Down day in March 2020 for the Preston Western Distributor Project as part of vital on-boarding for all strategic suppliers. The day was to reinforce the core principals of safe working and to discuss the project strategy.
As the project progresses we will continue to add value and build social impact.
Sunbelt attended the Safety Stand Down and with the assistance of Serious Labs provided a Powered Access simulator for the event. The day was enjoyed by all and thank you to Sunbelt for supporting the event.Robbie McCABE, SHE Advisor (part of the customer project team)
