Regional Social Impact Committee Scotland
We have Regional Social Impact Committees (RSIC) across the UK, with the one based in Scotland being one of our first.
Our RSIC Scotland sees members from all levels of leadership and operations, spanning across the region from a number of our locations and depots come together to drive change.
The team are passionate about making a difference and having a positive social impact across Scotland aligned to our three areas of focus:
Environment: Ensuring everything we do leads to a cleaner, healthier and safer environment.
Education & Skills: Developing a local community-based talent pipeline and encouraging opportunities for employment.
Social Equality: Improving opportunity and equity for those in our society whose need is greatest.
They meet every four weeks to create and progress initiatives that matter to the areas local to where we work. They involve local charities or other social enterprises to ensure our impact is wide reaching and providing targeted, relevant support.
After spending some time completing a Community Needs Assessment for key locations in Scotland, including Dundee, Glasgow, East Ayrshire and Fife, RSIC Scotland analysed the results to create an impactful project plan for 2022/2023 and beyond.
This plan covers a wide-ranging number of projects and activities to support the community including
- At least 10 volunteers signing up to be a part of our partnership with the charity Innovations for Learning, and helping young children at school learn to read through the Tutor Mate programme
- Running the Big Winter Donation Drive across October, November and December 2022 where all local depots will come together to collect donations and offer volunteering time for three main charities
In October - Aid Alliance supporting refugees from Ukraine
In November - Cash4Kids helping bring new toys to children who may not receive any at Christmas
In December – A number of local food banks helping those who may struggle to feed themselves and their families
- Pledge to run work experience programmes and targeted employability projects
- Develop three strategic Beacon School relationships with local schools who may benefit from our support on a regular, ongoing basis
The launch of the Scotland RSIC also quickly saw it pioneer the companies Big Winter Donation Drive, which was recognised as a great social impact initiative by our central Social Impact team and is being launched across all regions in 2022 as a result.
Meet a few members of the team
“My motivation to join the RSIC was the awareness that a business such as ours can, and does, have the potential to make massive changes for the good in local communities. From small scale donations of equipment to help an underfunded village gala, to life changing opportunities such as the TutorMate programme which I am involved in."
By doing this I would hope that people become aware that there are huge businesses out there that really do care and who genuinely want to make a difference.”
Heath McLaren, OpX Project Manager, Based UK wide
“After joining Sunbelt Rentals in early 2021 I wanted to join the social committee because I love helping people in any way I can. I signed up to TutorMate first and foremost to assist under privileged children with their reading skills, being a father myself I take great pride in reading to my son each and every night and it is something I very much enjoy doing. I hope the RSIC and the plans/actions we lay out help as many people as possible.”
