EUSR Cat 1 & Cat 2: Implement Safe Excavating Practices

EUSR Category 1 & 2 : Locate Utility Services and Implement Safe (Digging) Excavating Practices covers the training and assessment required for those working to safely detect utility services using recognised and approved detection methods and to safely excavate and maintain holes and trenches using both hand tools and hand held power tools. The standard has been derived from the National Occupational Standards.

The course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based tutorials and practical assignments. Delegates will be assessed through a mixture of theory and practical tests. 

These will include:  

  • Underground legislation and guidance pertaining to underground services, excavation, construction, and groundworks.  
  • Interpreting utility drawings and line search documents
  • Demonstrating usage of cable location devices (Cat & Genny) in order to locate utility services 
  • Identifying the dangers and hazards associated with carrying out ground survey detection
  • Accepting the limitations of underground utility detection equipment and drawings
  • Grasping the true costs of utility 'strikes' to contractors, stakeholders, and wider society
  • Distinguishing between good and bad practices via increased education in this specialist area
  • Identifying ground/soil types and changeable conditions faced on-site
  • Carrying out or interpreting Risk Assessment and Permits to Work
  • Implementing safe digging practices through hand digging techniques

This course is for delegates who are required to oversee or carry out work employing underground services detection devices.

Delegates must have basic spoken and written English skills.

Successful delegates will receive an EUSR photo ID card.

Companies who are CITB registered and meet their grant scheme eligibility requirements may be able to claim for a short course duration grant. Please contact us for further information.
