Load Restraint Training

See Course Dates

This course covers the legal requirements and responsibilities to carry and secure loads on a vehicle. It aims to offer drivers a thorough understanding of safe vehicle loads, the consequences of an insecure load, the people responsible for a load in transit and the role of enforcement agencies.

It's designed to help mitigate risk by encouraging drivers to think about the principles of loading, to be aware of how to use restraint equipment competently, and to adopt safe methods of securing vehicle loads.

The course will cover:

  • Vehicle loads: exploring the forces acting upon a moving vehicle and its load, minimum requirements and the law.
  • Load securing equipment: best practice in load security, straps, curtain-sided vehicles, applying the Belly Wrap and chains.
  • Enforcement & Penalties: how the DVSA enforce the rules, driver responsibilities, infringement categories and additional offences.
  • Overloaded vehicles: exploring the dangers of overloaded vehicles, including loads and weights, projection and overhanging, axle overloads, height rules and weighing in motion sensors (WIMS).

The course is intended for professional HGV drivers and transport managers that want to take the guesswork out of securing a load safely and understand their legal responsibilities for transporting a load on UK highways.

Delegates must be over 18 and have basic written and spoken English skills.

Successful delegates will receive a Spanset certificate valid for 3 years.
